Ruskin Redux: Rejoining Creativity and Pragmatism through Arts Education

The present paper calls for renewing John Ruskin’s challenge to the Modern dichotomy of isolating artistic endeavor from mainstream culture and economics, and to those public education systems that reinforce it. The goals of the paper are twofold: first, and entirely consistent with the Arts and Crafts ideology descendant from Ruskin, to establish a rationale within the contemporary milieu for enabling a greater, rather than a lesser, portion of society to routinely enjoy creative work; and second, to formulate means to better educate the public to receive and value, and thus encourage creative work.

David Lustgarten is an associate professor of graphic design and design history at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. He holds a BFA in art and design from the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City, and earned his MFA in Interdisciplinary Art at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont. After an 18-year career in graphic design, he accepted a full-time teaching post in 2000, and served as program director for Graphic Design and Digital Media from 2006–2012. Aside from teaching, David’s creative practice ranges from designing, to painting, to building authentic kayaks, and also serves in public art education initiatives in Burlington, Vermont.
