Opportunity to Learn to See the World from a New Angle: The Impact of an International Study Tour on Creative Arts Students' Learning

Over the past four years, Creative Arts undergraduate students have had the opportunity to participate in an international Art Study Tour. During the tour, students study Photography and European History and Culture at a University in Germany, attend major international art biennales and view exhibitions in cities in Europe and/or United States. Following the tour, students undertake a Creative Arts subject that includes for assessment a review of an exhibition seen while on tour, and the production of an original, creative work that reflects experiences of being abroad. Literature regarding undergraduate international study tours suggests that participation in these tours results in benefits that extend beyond formal curriculum to provide a path to self-improvement and a greater awareness of cross-cultural and global citizenship (Behnke, Seo & Miller, 2014). However, there is scant literature pertaining to International Art Study Tours. This study hopes to address this gap, through its investigation of the impact of participation in an international Art Study Tour on student learning, both within and beyond the formal Creative Arts curriculum.

Reesa Sorin

Associate Professor, Education, College of Arts, Society and Education, James Cook University, Cairns, Queensland, Australia

Reesa Sorin is Associate Professor in Education at James Cook University, in Cairns, Australia. She holds a PhD in Early Childhood Education from the University of Wollongong, Australia, where she also completed a Master of Arts (Honours) in Creative Arts and Early Childhood Education. Prior to this she studied in Winnipeg and Toronto, Canada, including a BA in English and Psychology; a BFA in Graphic Design and Photography; a graduate diploma in Early Childhood Education; and a post-graduate certificate in Art Education. She currently teaches Early Childhood Education and Arts Education in the College of Arts, Society and Education. Her research interests include: the Arts as teaching, learning and research tools; the impact of animals in the learning environment; environmental sustainability in the early years; conceptualisations of childhood; and emotional literacy.
